India’s automotive market saw a noticeable slowdown in June 2025, with most major manufacturers reporting month-on-month (MoM) declines in sales. Among the top ten best-selling cars of the month, only one model bucked the trend—Hyundai Creta, which not only retained strong consumer interest but emerged as the best-selling car in the country, overtaking long-time segment leaders from Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.
While June typically sees a dip in car sales due to seasonal factors and inventory adjustments, the data this year points to a broader industry-wide deceleration, affecting nearly all major carmakers and models across hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs. Let’s break down the performance of the top-selling cars last month.
1. Hyundai Creta – 15,786 units (+6.23% MoM)
Hyundai’s Creta was the only model in the top 10 to register a month-on-month increase in June 2025. With 15,786 units sold, the Creta not only outpaced its May sales figure of 14,860 but also surpassed rivals in the mid-size SUV category. Despite a slight year-on-year (YoY) decline of 3.11%, the Creta’s appeal remains strong, supported by a broad lineup that includes petrol, diesel, N Line, and recently launched electric variants. Pricing ranges from ₹11.11 lakh to ₹24.38 lakh (ex-showroom), covering a wide customer base.
2. Maruti Dzire – 15,484 units (-14.38% MoM)
After leading the charts in May, the Maruti Dzire slipped to second position in June with 15,484 units sold, marking a 14.38% drop. However, it posted a strong 15.37% YoY growth over June 2024. The Dzire continues to attract buyers in the compact sedan segment with its petrol and CNG variants, priced between ₹6.84 lakh and ₹10.19 lakh.
3. Maruti Brezza – 14,507 units (-6.80% MoM)
The Maruti Brezza remains a solid performer, occupying third place with 14,507 units, down 6.8% from May. However, a YoY growth of 10.14% reflects sustained consumer interest. With petrol and CNG options starting at ₹8.69 lakh, the Brezza competes directly with Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet.
4. Maruti Ertiga – 14,151 units (-12.32% MoM)
The popular Ertiga MPV registered 14,151 units, the exact same number as June 2024, but down from 16,140 in May—a 12.32% decline. Offered in petrol and CNG configurations, the Ertiga remains a go-to choice for families and fleet operators alike, with pricing between ₹8.97 lakh and ₹13.26 lakh.
5. Maruti Swift – 13,275 units (-6.08% MoM)
The Maruti Swift continued its decline, with 13,275 units sold, down from 14,135 in May and a sharp 19.16% drop YoY. The Swift faces mounting pressure from newer hatchbacks and compact SUVs, though it remains popular due to its affordability and efficiency, priced between ₹6.49 lakh and ₹9.50 lakh.
6. Maruti Wagon R – 12,930 units (-7.31% MoM)
Once a leader in small car sales, the Wagon R saw 12,930 units in June, a 7.31% MoM and 6.24% YoY decline. Known for its tall-boy design and spacious cabin, the Wagon R continues to appeal to budget-conscious buyers, priced between ₹5.79 lakh and ₹7.50 lakh.
7. Mahindra Scorpio (Classic + N) – 12,740 units (-11.53% MoM)
Mahindra’s Scorpio brand—comprising the Scorpio N and Classic—registered 12,740 units, down 11.53% from May. The Scorpio Classic remains diesel-only, while the Scorpio N is available in petrol and diesel options, priced between ₹13.77 lakh and ₹25.62 lakh. A recent ADAS update to the Scorpio N’s Z8L variant may help revive momentum in the coming months.
8. Tata Nexon – 11,602 units (-11.41% MoM)
Despite being one of the most versatile offerings with petrol, diesel, CNG, and EV powertrains, Tata Nexon’s sales declined 11.41% to 11,602 units. It also recorded a YoY drop of 3.85%. The Nexon is priced between ₹8.00 lakh and ₹15.60 lakh for ICE versions and ₹12.49 lakh to ₹17.19 lakh for the EV, competing with XUV 3XO and MG ZS EV.
9. Tata Punch – 10,446 units (-20.46% MoM)
The Tata Punch suffered the steepest MoM drop among the top 10, falling 20.46% to 10,446 units. Even more concerning is the 42.72% YoY decline, reflecting waning demand amid rising competition. Tata offers the Punch in petrol, CNG, and EV variants, with pricing from ₹6.20 lakh to ₹14.14 lakh.
10. Maruti Fronx – 9,815 units (-27.75% MoM)
At the bottom of the list is the Maruti Fronx, with 9,815 units, down 27.75% from May. However, it did manage a slight 1.31% YoY increase. Positioned as a youthful compact crossover, the Fronx is priced between ₹7.55 lakh and ₹12.91 lakh and competes with the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
Market Insights
The June 2025 car sales report underscores a broader market correction, with only the Hyundai Creta managing to grow MoM. While macroeconomic factors such as interest rates, fuel prices, and buyer sentiment may be influencing the downturn, most OEMs are likely to respond with new facelifts, discounts, or feature enhancements in the coming months.
With the festive season around the corner, manufacturers will be hoping for a bounce-back. Until then, Hyundai Creta stands tall as the lone star in an otherwise sluggish month for the Indian automotive industry.
